In 1998, Buenos Aires created an official designation (Bares Notables) for bars, cafes, billiard halls and the like whose historical significance, architecture or contribution to society makes them worth noting and preserving. We're doing our best to work our way down the list which now numbers more than 70.
Our first was Cafe Tortoni. The golden lighting gave everything an aged glow...as if the place isn't old enough already. The coffee was alright, the clientele mostly tourists, the decor rather interesting. If you're in the neighborhood, worth a visit.
